Astragalus is a fundamental herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), historically used to protect the “Wei Qi” (defensive energy) and support the immune system. While there are over 3,000 species, Astragalus membranaceus is the one primarily used for health supplementation.
In the male enhancement industry, Astragalus is often added to “kitchen sink” herbal blends (like Tiger’s Jump) as an “energy booster.” However, its reputation as a sexual performance enhancer is largely based on myth rather than mechanics.
Does Astragalus Increase Penis Size?
Likely not. Unlike L-Arginine (Vasodilation) or Ashwagandha (Testosterone), Astragalus lacks a clear biological mechanism to support penile growth or erection quality directly.
The Science: Immunity vs. Virility
1. The “Exhaustion” Theory:
Ancient texts suggest Astragalus aids in recovery from “sexual exhaustion.” Modern science supports its role in reducing fatigue and boosting cellular energy (ATP), which might help you recover energy after sex, but it does not physically enlarge the tissue.
2. The Cell Growth Study:
There is obscure research noting that Astragalus increased the thickness of the “submesothelial cell layer” in rats. While this technically involves tissue thickening, there is zero evidence that this translates to the specific smooth muscle or tunica albuginea of the human penis.
3. Anti-Aging (Telomeres):
The most promising science on Astragalus relates to telomere lengthening (anti-aging). While excellent for longevity, this has no impact on penis size.
